How to use a supplement to prevent bug bites

Mosquitoes, mites and other nasty midges can make your summer and holidays a misery. However, it is possible to use a supplement to prevent bug bites so you  don't have to worry about those angry red marks and painful lumps that they cause. 

What kind of supplement will prevent bug bites?

Insects definitely prefer to bite some people more than others. Fortunately there are several things you can do to make your blood less appetising to mosquitoes and other biting insects.

I have been on holiday abroad several times and have never been bitten while friends and family I was travelling with were covered in bites. As much as I would like to think I am a super being, it is more likely that they leave me alone because I take multi vitamins and iron supplements.  More specifically, the vitamin B1 that is included in them.

Several studies have indicated that taking 100g vitamin B1 supplement and vitamin B 100 complex daily for around four weeks before your holiday can prevent bug bites. If you want to prevent bug bites all year round then take this supplement daily. Insects seem to be repelled by people who take supplements regularly. It does not always stop them completely but they will be less attracted to you so you won't get as many. 

Taking either vitamin B complex or multivitamins won't just stop the bugs from biting it will also improve your all round health, energy and vitality.

Why bother taking a supplement? Can't I just get vitamins and minerals from my food?

It is true that no amount of vitamins can replace a healthy diet. However, most nutritionists will agree that it is very hard to get the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals from food alone. Lack of  the recommended daily allowance of certain vitamins can result in low energy levels and other health issues. 

How to stop mosquito bites: Other methods

Supplements will protect you from mosquito and insect bites from the inside. However, they are not the only method.  Here's a few things you can do to stop mosquito bites:

  • Avoid eating bananas before (and during) your holiday or if you are going to be in an area where mosquitoes are a problem. The way your body processes bananas attracts these sweet loving creatures.
  • Replace stinky conventional insect repellent with Vicks Vaporub. Conventional insect repellent which contain DEET can be very toxic especially for young children. Vicks Vaporub works makes a fantastic alternative and is much gentler.
  • Citronella is widely used as mosquito deterrent. They hate the smell of it and will avoid it. The soap is made from blend of essential oils that will soothe and hydrate the skin while keeping the little critters away. The incense works brilliantly because the mosquitoes hate the smoke and the aroma of the citronella. This is especially good for camping trips.
  • Plug in repellent. These are great for night time but make sure you change the pads as directed.
